Krishn, the 'makhan chor' is the cutest thief in the whole universe. Usually he steals makhan (butter) from the houses of gwalins (milkmaids) but today he is caught by his mother Yashoda while stealing butter in his own house. This verse by Surdas shows how cleverly he manages to save himself from the rage of the mother. Let's see what he says when the mother asked, "Have you tried to steal in your own house? Son, did you eat butter?"...

मैया मैं नहिं माखन खायौ।

Maiya mai nhi makhan khayo.

Mother, I haven't eaten butter.

जानि परै ये सखा सबै मिलि, मेरो मुख लपटायौ॥

Jaani parei ye sakha sabei mili, mero mukh laptaayo.

The rememants of butter that you are seeing on my face was forcibly applied by my cowherd friends.

देखि तुही छींके पर भाजन, ऊँचैं धरि लटकायौ।

Dekhi tuhi chhinke par bhajan, unchein dhari latkaayo.

Mother! See, how high you have hung the utensil where the butter is stored.

हौं जु कहत नान्हे कर अपनै मैं कैसैं करि पायौ॥

Haun ju kahat nanhe kar apnei main kaisen kari paayo

How can even I reach there with my small little hands?

मुख दधि पोंछि, बुद्धि इक कीन्ही, दोना पीठि दुरायौ।

Mukh dadhi ponchhi, budhi ik kinhi, dona pithi duraayo.

... Saying so Krishn then with one hand wipes out the butter on his face and very cleverly hides the other hand that still had one handful of butter.

डारि साँटि, मुसुकाइ जसोदा, स्यामहि कंठ लगायौ॥

Daari saanti, muskaayi Jasoda, syamahi kanth lagaayo.

Mesmerized by the cuteness and cleverness of his son, mother Yashoda forgets her anger. She throws away the stick, smiles and then hugs her child.

बाल-बिनोद-मोद मन मोह्यौ, भक्ति-प्रताप दिखायौ।

Baal binod mod man mohyo, bhakti pratap dikhayo.

Krishn through his 'baal leelas' has captivated his devotees and has filled their soul with joy. In doing so, he has emphasized the significance of bhakti.

सूरदास जसुमति कौ यह सुख, सिव बिरंचि नहिं पायौ॥

Surdas Jasumati kau yaha sukh, siv biranchi nahin paayo.

Surdas further writes even Shiv and Bramha cannot get the happiness and blissfulness that mother Yashoda is blessed with.
